Complete Remodeling of a Private House in Filothei
“The big challenge”
The brave decision for the complete remodeling of a 1953 dwelling in the outskirts of Athens, as opposed to the demolition and erection of a new building, created challenges both in the architectural composition as well as in the construction.
The overall reform of the building shell and the façades had, as its primary objective, the aesthetic improvement of the house. A monolithic white volume now dominates in the property. Grey architectural elements in the form of metal boxes identifying the windows protrude from the façades, breaking up and at the same time highlighting the white volume. The interior was rearranged to cover the needs of a family with four children and new uses where introduced in the external areas.
Emphasis was given in the design to increase the natural light and the visual permeability within the house and the property. A new courtyard was created at the back of the property as an extension to the kitchen and family room and a 12,5m long x 2,25m wide swimming pool was placed along the side property border and a newly constructed climbing wall.
