Situated in the heart of Piraeus business district-in the vicinity of the Economic University of Piraeus- the Harbor Project is a boutique building property offering luxurious accommodation to the highest standard. It is introducing a new concept in the philosophy of short stay service property, comprising apartment suites of average size of 35 square meters. The design proposal refers to a ground breaking design that maximizes ergonomic and practicality, amounting almost at 50% over that of the typical apartment layouts. To quote Architect John Pawson “Architecture isn’t just about creating new building, sometimes its just about returning what’s already there….’ and the context of port and ship building is closely and historically related to the vicinity.
Following a research brief in ergonomics and layout design of Container Lines, the research focused on translating the modularity and autonomy of a large scale container vessel to that of 35 sq meters. The compartmentalized nature of a vessels hull, the traffic patterns as well as the specially designed openings that allow circulation without compromising strength and tensile attributes are becoming a metaphor to the architectural wooden structure occupying the center of the floor plan.
The structure following the flow concept that determines the design philosophy of BllendDesign & Research Office incorporated the utilities of a comfortable dressing room and a bedroom bookcase, a comfortable desk and storage compartment near the entrance. The wooden structure continues in a poly linear design all the way to the kitchen area, dominating the whole room in terms of design and material choice, yet giving the impression of a large scale apartment.
