We were asked to design an American style bar and restaurant within an extensive open space, that would somehow work with the existing architecture of the Bauhaus style building. We looked at how Bauhaus was adapted in the US during the 50s and 60s and were inspired by the futuristic, streamlined designs and the use of lighting as a decorative tool.
We needed to transform the large space into a restaurant and bar with 2 separate kitchens, without losing the sense of openness and flow of light. We wanted the 600 sqm to feel continuous but we needed to create zones. We placed the staircase, bar and kitchens as illuminated, interactive objects around which the energy of the activity could flow. The design details and materials of these objects give the space a complexity without separation.
The static enclosures are brought to life through elegant and dynamic lighting design. Light washes down the wood cladding of the twin pods of the bar and the 'hot' kitchen; above it is reflected across the ribbed glass and neon signage adds a vibrant glow of colour to the mix. The cold cathode halos that stack to form a modernist chandelier above the staircase are also used to mark out the cold kitchen, wrapping it in a streamlined glow.
